Western Australia belongs to one of the subterranean fauna hotspots of the world. Subterranean fauna is often highly range-restricted and therefore of conservation significance. This Fauna Portal project therefore aims to facilitate the identification of the largely undescribed troglofauna of Western Australia.
Barrow Island is an an A-class Nature Reserve off the Pilbara coast of north-western Western Australia. The construction of a gas treatment plant on this protected island triggered comprehensive environmental and quarantine surveys which documented almot 4,000 species of terrestrial invertebrates.
